Topic: microcalcification cluster on mammogram Posted: Feb 08 2012 at 1:01pm |
I had my annual mammogram yesterday and they found microcalcification clusters on my right breast. I had my left breast removed Jan. 09 and had stage 3 tnbc. The doctor told me that this is probably not a reoccurence but a new breast cancer. I go for a biopsy tomorrow. Has anyone else gotten tnbc in the other breast later ?

First of all, don't panic - easier said than done, right?
My second TNBC was found a little over three years after my first TNBC - opposite breast, and showed up as calcifications on my normally scheduled mammogram. I had a stereotactic biopsy which confirmed TNBC. My oncologist considered it a new occurance rather than a reccurance. It was small, only 3mm. I had a double mastectomy with reconstruction about a month later. No lymph involvement and I did not do any chemo this time. So far, so good - over two years out and, knock on wood, everything is ok.
I am just thankful that I had a good mammography center with radiologists that read them right away. Because of my history, it was imperative to biopsy it rather than "wait and watch".

The radiologists said they did not recommend a stereotatic biopsy because this appears to be so close to my chest wall. I am hoping this is small --I have already decided to have a mastectomy if it is cancer. I am just dreading the fact that I may have to go through this again. I was so sick from the chemo the first time and the Taxal x12 left me with neuropathy in both legs ( no feeling from the knees down) and some in my fingers. I'm a strong Believer, and what is really troubling me is the thought of hanging over the commode each day again. Thanks for letting me vent.

Gail,
There is a possibility that the microcalcifications are not cancer. I had some in the same breast as my tumor--they were biopsied and were benign. It's possible that this could happen with you, too. I hope it's not cancer again.

Thanks--I'm in a better frame of mind this morning. I've prayed and read my Bible and ready to face whatever I find out. I go to the surgeon at 2:15 today. ( I lived in Macon for 28 years)

Good luck, Gail! I'm voting for 'no cancer'. And if a cancer, an itty bitty harmless DCIS. Fingers crossed for you, d

gevans,
When I was diagnosed and met with the breast surgeon I had to go back and get the last 5 years of mammogram films. When I asked what the white areas were on the film, they said calcifications. There were lots of areas. Not all calcifications are breast cancer, but some can be. On a side note in my case, I had a bilateral mastectomy and the path report on the good breast showed areas of precancerous activity. Hoping it's just some calcifications that appear as we age and nothing worrisome. But if it is a new primary cancer, it sounds like they found it early. Please let us know what you find out.

Gail,
I'm praying you get good news! But, even if it is not the best, it's still local and that's good. Keep in touch.

The biopsy is Monday morning. The surgeon ( who I trust) says he feels there is a great chance it is not cancer but that if it is, we have caught it early and he can take care of it. Will let you know how its going.
