Hi everyone,

I  have lung and liver mets. My latest CT showed improvement with the tumor's size but at the same time my 27.29 went up. Does it make sense? After first treatment it went down to 44 from 60 and now its 57. I'm happy with the Ct results but the tumor marker is confusing me. Did any body have similar situation?

Meg, tumor markers don't track cancer progression for everyone.  Has your marker been reliable in the past?  (For instance, what was it when you were first diagnosed, and have you seen it go up and down with the growth and recession of your cancer?)
If you are pretty sure your marker tracks your cancer accurately, this is something to discuss with your doctor.  If not, maybe just ignore it.  The CT result should be a better measure of what is going on than your marker unless you have reason to believe otherwise.   Personally, I would believe the CT and keep going with my current treatment until I had CT or symptomatic evidence that it is not doing its job.
Good luck and so sorry you have the added stress of these damn markers on top of everything else.
Love,

d

Meg, my tumor markers CA15-3 showed normal during my entire chemo treatment and then come to find out I was metastatic from the beginning. My onc. last month switched over to CA27.29 and marker was 40 which is pretty damn good for me having liver tumors! My point is this, tumor markers can read false if you do not emit the proteins that pick up cancer cells. Go with what dmwolf said and what I believe in...your ct scans. Tumor markers are just a diagnostic tool whereas ct/pet scans are the "big guns." Many oncologists don't even run tumor markers on patients because they can read false. Always go by how your body is feeling and what your scans show.
Good luck and lots of cyber hugs and thoughts

Mine always go up and down...some months we watch it raise for a couple of months and then it goes down....

We always rely on scans as the final determiner.

We use them as an indicator only.

Just got my ct scans back today....still NED in the lungs and my tumors are shrinking even more in the liver. My onc. feels that the way chemo is working I could be NED next ct scan which will be in a few months. Yah!!!

Since your tumor is low er+ are u taking tamoxifen? My liver tumor was tested and I am 10-15% ER+ but my onc. is not sure I should take tamoxifen.
