QuoteReplyTopic: lungs after rads - inflammation? Posted: Mar 28 2015 at 1:05am
Hi there, I finished my rads (x25) mid January 2015, and I've been noticing a tightness or pressure or tickle in my lung that makes me feel like coughing or clearing my throat. It's hard for me to fully describe the feeling because it's not like a typical cough from a cold. I've been noticing it's since around Christimas time, and I mentioned it to my radiation oncologist about 3 weeks ago. He said that he believes it's inflammation on my lung from the radiation. I'm hoping that this is the case, but it has me concerned. Could it be cancer on my lung? Is this a common feeling after radiation? And if so, how long does it last for? What does lung cancer feel like? I see my oncologist for my next 3 month checkup on April 7th.
Hi Rosewater, My RO warned me that I could develop a cough from radiation. However, I did not. He said its a dry cough. Not sure if this helps you, but hopefully, you will get answers at your next appointment. I will keep you in my prayers. Hugs, lilyrose
After I finished radiation I developed a cough too. I ended up getting radiation pneumonitis. My onc prescribed an antiobiotic and cough medicine until it got better.

Hi Lilyrose and Donna, Thank you for responding. I'm praying that it is radiation pneumonitis. I googled it, and it sounds very much like what I'm feeling. I just hope that lung cancer doesn't feel the same way. Donna, did you have to have any scans on your lungs for the doc to diagnose the RP?
No, I didn't have any scans to dx RP. I had just finished radiation treatment and then developed a cough. It got worse and reminded me of a bronchial cough. I also started running a fever of 100. This was in July so it was unusual to get sick like this. It was the weekend and I called my onc's office and talked to the onc on call. She prescribed a z-pack and cough medicine for me. It did the trick and I got better with no other problems. If it didn't, I'm sure my onc would have ordered a scan.
