Topic: TNBC TRIBUTES Posted: Jul 06 2009 at 5:59pm |
Hello everyone,
Over the past few months, a number of members have asked us to offer a tribute section on our website to help our community honor and remember the women who have lost their battle with triple negative disease.
We feel that we've now found a perfect home for our TNBC Tributes. You will find them listed as a sub-forum under the TNBC Forum: Remembering Nancy Block Zenna.
We hope you will all share your stories and memories with us.

I've noticed that no one has posted any tributes. I would like to be the first if I may.
My sister Patty lost her battle with Triple Negative Breast Cancer on Thanksgiving morning (11/26/09) at 6:50 am. It was ironic because she found her lump on Thanksgiving 2007. When she was first diagnosed we had never heard of TNBC and had no idea what an uphill battle my sister was facing. Her treatment started with chemo, followed by a mastectomy and then radiation. At the end of summer 2008, doctors at Dana Farber said she was cancer free. We were all so happy. Unfortunately it was only 3 short months until it returned. More chemo over several months and she was again told in April 2009 that her cat scan was clear. Her three month check up bought bad news as cancer was found throughout her lymph system and in her bones. She would not be discouraged. She had decided that she would be a conqueror not just a survivor. The next rounds of chemo, 2 different ones, unfortunately did not work and the cancer spread throughout her body. While she did win battles along the way, she was unable to win the war and despite her valiant effort we lost her. She was amazing right until the end.
She leaves behind two daughters, 20 and 22 years old, and a 13 year old son. Also our parents and 5 sisters and 3 brothers. We all had the privilege of being with her in her final hours and she was brave to the end.
Rest in Peace "Patty the Conqueror" (1961-2009).
You are my hero.

Dear Sister,
I am so terribly sorry for you loss. It breaks my heart to read of young vibrant women losing this terrible battle.
I just received news today that a friend of my daughter's was given the same news as your dear sister. She is relying on God and her faith to get her and her family through all this.
Again, my heartfelt sorrow and I pray that you and your family have an abundance of peace.
Love, Hugs and Prayers,
Carol

Sister, this made me cry here in my office. I'm so sorry. I'll make a tribute thread especially for her. Do you have an obit and picture? If so, could you please post it in Patty's tribute thread once I (or you) make one? Much love, Denise

I am sorry so sorry but I cannot read these tributes. I am sure they are wonderful and the women very courageous but it is too difficult for me to read them because it hits too close to home. I hope you all don't take this wrong but it has been a difficult road for us and I am just wondering if others are having a tough time here with these wonderful tributes. I felt like crying reading these and it is just too much for me at this time.
Sorry,
Dave

Thank you for your kind responses.
Dave I understand how for some the tributes may be difficult to read. I don’t think I could have read them while my sister was still with us. I am grateful, however, to have a place like this to talk about my sister. We should not forget those who have left us and fight for a cure in their honor.
JoAnn
DMWOLF here is the obit you requested. I can't seem to figure out how to post the picture.

I would like to post a tribute for a dear friend who died of breast cancer in 1997. Her name was Nancy Semf and she lived somewhere in New Jersey. I never saw Nancy's face, but she and I became very close friends via the internet. She was home recovering from surgery when we happened to make contact on the Oprah message boards. We began a daily correspondence that lasted up until her death just over a year later.
Nancy was a dear person who lived to love her family...her husband Beau and a fifteen year old son. I thought she was extraordinary, and she thought I was an angel sent by the one above to help her through her illness. At the time I was a 12 year survivor. I will never forget her.
Nancy was a registered nurse who had worked in ICU. Her mother died of breast cancer when Nancy was only fifteen. Nancy donated her body to research in hopes of helping others conquer their disease. She didn't want a funeral....just a family dinner in her memory. She left everyone letters to be read when they felt ready to read them. She left one for me, but for some reason her family never got it to me. I still think of her often. I hope she's watching me.
Susan

I lost my Triple Negative "Breast Friend"
Carla Hearst
Carla Kay Litaker Hearst, 47, joined the church eternal on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, following a valiant 16 month struggle with breast cancer. She was born Oct. 23, 1962, the daughter of Betty Jo H. Litaker and the late Carl Adams Litaker. On April 29, 1989, she was married to Leo Vincent Hearst III, who survives her. Mrs. Hearst was a graduate of Statesville High School and of Salem College, Winston-Salem. While at Salem, she was a cross country runner and was a piano accompanist for the Salem Academy Choir. A lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Statesville, Carla was faithful and devoted to her church. While growing up she participated in the youth group and as an adult she was a faithful member of many of the church's committees, the church council, the call committee for the present pastor, and a member and soloist of the choir. Almost from birth Carla loved music, either listening to or playing it. One of her favorite things was singing with the Mitchell Community College Choir. Carla was employed with Orchard Software Co., Indianapolis, Ind., and worked from her home. An inseparable couple, Carla and Leo enjoyed many activities together, including golfing, bowling, riding their Harley Davidson motorcycle, singing in the church choir, traveling, and entertaining their friends. A favorite activity of theirs was watching TV with their beloved black cats, Jack and Judy. Carla developed close ties with classmates from Salem College and following her cancer diagnosis, this group became known as the Princess Warriors. Later, others were added to this elite group who have been a source of comfort and support. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Jones III officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m. this evening at Nicholson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to any organization supporting the cure of cancer; the Iredell County Humane Society; Gordon Hospice House; St. John's Lutheran Church; or to the charity of the donor's choice. Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family of Carla Litaker Hearst. The family would like to express sincerest appreciation to Dr. Susan Melin and Alicia DeTroye PA, Jorge and Vicki Garcia, and all other medical personnel at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital, for the meticulous and devoted care given to Carla during her treatment and stay there.
Carla was diagnosed in June of 2008 with TNBC, stage IIa. I met Carla in March of 2009 after she had completed treatment and was considered NED. In May of 2009 she found a swollen lymph node near her collar bone and the CT scans showed stage IV mets.
In 2009 Carla participated in both the Komen Race for the Cure and the AVON event in Oct. 2009 while undergoing chemo.
Our team "The Divine Tata Princess Warriors" have vowed to walk in the Komen Race on May 1st and the AVON walk in Oct. 2010. She will be our ANGEL and walk with us to help us raise funds to find a cure!

My deepest sympathy for Carla's family, friends, TataWarriors, and fellow tnbc sisters.
I felt led to add this scripture this morning on our Spiritual Suppost thread. Maybe Carla is why.
"In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself that where I am, there you may be also." John 14:2,3
Love and Prayers,
Carol
