Hi Everyone,

I have a friend of a friend who lives in Knoxville, TN. She has DCIS (not TN)for the second time and wants to do a BMX. She is a previous cancer survivor from her teen years so has some other factors to consider. I know that someone (Judy?) had started a thread with doctor recommendations but haven't been able to find it. The local person recommended to her is pretty new and she isn't comfortable with that. It sounds like she can travel but not sure how far she is willing to go. Any names anyone is willing to share would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Deb

Hi Deb,

My wife Susan and I live in Knoxville. We were referred to local doctors when Susan was diagnosed in 2010, but chose to go to Vanderbilt in Nashville for treatment. That is not to say that there aren't good doctors in Knoxville, but based on our previous experiences both in Knoxville and at Vanderbilt, we found the overall level of care at Vanderbilt to be far superior. We have a number of breast cancer friends in Knoxville who also chose to go to Vanderbilt for treatment and doctors in Knoxville often refer their more difficult cases to Vanderbilt. Nashville is only a three hour pleasant drive from Knoxville and well worth the time. Susan's oncologist is Ingrid Mayer and her surgeon is Anna Grau. They are both excellent physicians and we found them, as well as the nurses and staff at Vanderbilt, to be professional, compassionate caregivers. I'll send you a PM with our contact info.

We will keep you and your friend in our prayers.

Martin

Hi Deb,

Sounds like Martin may have given you the exact info you need.
Maybe the surgeon he mentioned could provide the names of the plastic surgeons she works with
(unless she is a plastic surgeon).
Only other thing would be if any member knew names of oncology surgeons and oncology plastic
surgeon at either UNC (Chapel Hill, NC) or Duke (Durham,NC).......but both of those would involve
more travel than to Vanderbilt.

Other thought, if some one knows surgeons in that area, they could post or PM you.....whichever
they preferred.

Since the thread is BMX/Recon, wanted to share the info about reconstruction on the Johns Hopkins
site......not to travel that far but the site has a summary of reconstruction options.
http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/avon_foundation_breast_center/
On left of website: click on "choosing reconstructive surgery"
Learn About Reconstructive Breast Surgeries
Pre-operative blood vessel mapping
Tissue expanders (staged reconstruction)
Implants
Deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap
Superior gluteal artery perforator (SGAP) flap
Lateral septal gluteal artery perforator (LSGAP) flap
Superficial inferior epigastric artery (SIEA) flap
Transverse upper glacilis (TUG) flap
Transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap
Oncoplastic surgery
Also comparisons of reconstruction options at: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/avon_foundation_breast_center/treatments_services/reconstructive_breast_surgery/options.html
Note: Disclaimer.   I could not delete the last column re: why to choose Johns Hopkins. I included this
site as the columns that explained the advantages and disadvantages of each type of reconstruction
had good info.   I am not recommending one facility over another facility.   Facility choice is
        yours and your physician's.

Yes, there is a thread......started by ArleneB.....on Doctors recommendations (from members).
It's in the TNBC Polls and Surveys section.
http://forum.tnbcfoundation.org/Oncologist-recommendations-from-members_topic5721.html
Looks like the MD Martin mentioned above, Dr. Ingrid Mayer is the MD listed for Tennessee.

With caring and positive thoughts,
Grateful for today............Judy

I am investigating a procedure done thru only a few surgeons in the country and it includes a lymph node transfer along with DIEP.  I have stage LE in my  arm and already hate it so much I cannot wait for relief.  The surgeon is Dr Marga Massey and she have four offices though the US, Chicago, Charleston, Salt Lake and New Orleans.  I am leaning towards NOLA as the entire hospital there is dedicated to breast recon.  Cannot wait to get my foobies on baby!!!  Just waiting to hear what my cost will be for the procedures but i am really excited and feel confident that this is the right choice for me and my crappy LE!!
